The massage therapies available at
Musselman Mountain Massage range from short relaxing
Chair Massages and therapeutic Deep Tissue Massages to
soothing Prenatal Massages.
Massage has been a therapy practiced through the ages.
Early Egyptians were known to have used massage therapy
in their healing arts. Massage stimulates the blood
circulation, enhances your natural endorphins (the
“feel-good” hormones), relaxes sore muscles, reduces
back pain, eases headaches, and promotes normal joint
movement.

Myofascial Release (MFR)
Treatment for Chronic Pain
Kathy has
completed 20 hours with the world-renowned John Barnes, PT,
originator of the Myofascial Release (MFR) Treatment for chronic
pain. Fascia is a connective tissue that wraps around every muscle,
organ and cell in you body. Mr. Barnes’ theory is that due to
stresses in our modern-day life, both physical and emotional, the
fascia becomes “stuck”—or restricted. This in turn, sets you up for
a lifetime of pain, due to the inflammatory response and lack of
oxygen to the tissues.
MFR is a steady,
deepening pressure of the therapist’s hands to the skin. The
therapist will hold the pressure for at least 90 seconds and
possibly 5 minutes, allowing the deeper structures and fascia to
release. Mr. Barnes has a treatment center in Paoli, Pennsylvania
and Sedona, Arizona. He has trained over 50,000 therapists and his
clinics have reported a tremendous success rate in alleviating pain.
Kathy
is eager to apply the MFR Treatment to ease chronic pain in her
clients. Contact Kathy today to discuss
whether you are a candidate for MFR treatment.

Swedish Massage Therapy
I have been going to Kathy for the hot stone massages since she opened for business. My shoulders are usually very tight from working on computers all day and studying in the evenings.
She makes me feel like a new person when my massage has been completed. The atmosphere and music also help me to totally relax. I recommend everyone try one of the massages!
Pat Codman
Swedish Massage is a relaxing, soothing, basic massage. This
massage is great for relaxing tired, sore muscles. You will have an
overall general feeling of well-being after a Swedish Massage
session at our spa.
Traditional Swedish Massage uses five main strokes and many
variations to achieve its relaxing and healing effects. Like many
massage therapists, we use an assortment of techniques and pressure
levels to meet our clients’ needs.
- Effleurage - Long strokes from the neck to the base of the
spine or from the shoulder down to the fingertips. Many strokes
are toward the heart to aid in blood flow.
- Petrissage – Gently lifts, rolls, squeezes, and kneads
muscles to enhance circulation and help to clear toxins from the
muscles.
- Friction - Deep circular motions, among the most penetrating
massage strokes, breaks down knots in the muscles.
- Tapotement - Brisk percussive movements of the hands that
strike or tap the muscles for an invigorating effect and to
release tension and cramping from muscles in spasm.
- Vibration or Shaking – Pressing the massage therapist’s
hands into the muscles while rapidly shaking for a few seconds
to boost circulation and increase the power of the muscles to
contract.

Hot Stone Massage Therapy
Hot Stone Therapy incorporates basic
Swedish Massage with the soothing and calming influence
of hot stones. This modality will transport you to a
place of harmony, peace, and tranquillity.
The basalt rocks are heated to a comfortable level,
providing a deep penetrating heat that is perfect for
soothing sore muscles. The heat of the hot stones
increases healing through improved blood flow and
circulation. In Hot Stone Therapy, various sized stones
are used for different parts of the body. |

Deep Tissue Massage Therapy
Deep Tissue Massage uses a deeper touch to ease
specific painful areas. This massage therapy is usually
incorporated with the relaxing strokes of Swedish
Massage.
Sore muscles are squeezed, stretched, and kneaded by
your massage therapist with skillful hand movements and
carefully placed pressures. Deep Tissue Massage
increases blood circulation. Regular treatments loosen
tight muscles, increasing flexibility and range of
motion while reducing pain.

Prenatal Massage Therapy
Calming for body and mind, a Prenatal Massage is a soothing
massage for the mother-to-be. A Prenatal massage helps alleviate
some of the discomforts of the physical changes taking place as your
pregnancy advances.
Like most massage, Prenatal Massage Therapy is used to relax sore
muscles, ease low back pain, soothe aching trouble spots, increase
circulation and mobility, help you sleep better, and increase your
physical well-being. Prenatal massage is tailored specifically to
the needs of pregnant women. Pregnancy changes your center of
gravity. It puts stress on your back, abdominal and shoulder
muscles, and forces changes in your posture. Each of these stressors
can cause cramps and pain – especially low back pain. A Prenatal
massage helps to relieve many of these symptoms.

Chair Massage
A Chair Massage is a focused 10-15 minute massage.
This fully clothed and seated massage is great for upper body, neck,
and shoulder tension. A Chair Massage is wonderful as a quick
pick-me-up for computer and office workers.
Chair Massages offer a wonderful opportunity to deal with sore
muscles, stiff necks, tight shoulders, headaches, and aching wrists
– all the typical ailments office workers are most familiar with.
Many of these symptoms can be attributed to the loss of circulation
and being in one position too long. A Chair Massage increases
circulation and helps the body’s self-healing mechanisms. Sitting in
a massage chair “opens up” the back muscles and relieves strain on
the neck. Even a short, fifteen minute massage to the neck, back,
arms, and hands increases circulation, thereby returning energy
levels and helping to keep your body injury free.

Orthopedic Massage &
Mobility Assessment
The Mobility Assessment and Orthopedic Massage (OM)
is a rather new technique in massage circles. The Assessment piece
is an in-depth assessment by the therapist to determine where and
which muscle is indicated in the problem experienced by the client.
Work, posture, functional limitations, injuries all will be
discussed to determine the root cause of the problem.
The Orthopedic Massage is a gentle, rocking motion with very small
strokes . It is excellent for the client who cannot tolerate or does
not like the feel of the deep tissue massage. It is indicated to be
used in arthritis, low back pain, neck stiffness and pain, rotator
cuff injuries, knee injuries, tendon and ligament injuries. In
addition to providing the benefits of traditional massage, such as
relaxation and increased circulation, OM has several other treatment
goals. OM dissolves adhesions, and lengthens the connective tissue.
It helps normalize muscle function by reducing the tenseness and
tightness connected with muscular pain.
Along with the assessment and massage, the therapist will use Muscle
Energy Techniques (MET) with the client. These MET’s are gentle
stretching exercises which uses the client’s strength in helping to
relieve muscle spasm. These are not painful, and in fact, feel quite
good to the client experiencing pain. A program of gentle stretching
will be sent home with the client. This is an active, participatory
massage. Although, most clients find it very helpful and soothing,
it is not the relaxing, “put you to sleep” type of massage. Most
clients will leave the session feeling energized.
The therapist will be working closely with your physician in certain
diagnosed conditions.

Massage Therapy at Our Spa Can Help
Along with the tension and stress of everyday life in the working
world, headaches are common. Muscular tension from sitting too long
in a car or in one position lends itself to tension headaches.
Massage is very beneficial for this type of headache. Relief can be
felt almost immediately with a few well-placed strokes to the back
of the neck and head.
Shortened, contracted muscles are also common in the hip and pelvic
area from sitting for extended periods. A massage therapist is adept
in the process of teasing the muscles into relaxation by various
exercises and massage strokes.
Low back pain is quite common. Many times the problem can be traced
to “tight” muscles from overworked and underused muscles. Such
injuries are common with those “weekend warriors” who focus all of
their exercise, gardening, or marathon house cleaning into a few
short hours on the weekend.
